Car enthusiast John, a few hobbyist friends and some contracted help started out to build what they hoped would become a dream hot rod for John and his wife Cathy. Seeing things come together, they were increasingly excited about their progress but, as the years went by, they also became increasingly frustrated with the length of time the project was taking. They wanted the car completed, and contracted Xtreme to complete the build. The engine, a 354 Chrysler Hemi was already built and ready to fire up. Two years and many samples later, exactly the right hue of paint to accent the body had been selected. Seating, door panels, dash and steering wheel were all in the wrapped, upholstered and waiting final installation.
Xtreme was contracted to pull together all those previous efforts, and add our expertise to deliver the finished show rod the couple had dreamed off.
The Xtreme project included:
- Engineering and building a chassis using original rails and adding tube bracing for the Hemi
engine and 4-link rear suspension.
- Installing Kugel / Independent coil over front suspension with rack & pinion steering.
- Fabricating custom moldings for hood and running boards.
- Installing the Hemi/custom wire and plumb for a super clean look.
- Designing and fabricating the exhaust system.
- Modifying the convertible top frame for that "Auburn Look", chopped & stretched.
- Engineering & fabricating drop in Windows with working vent and 60/40 Slider.
- Designing and executing custom wheels and hub caps (not in photo shown).
- Adjusting, cutting, and adding to get all those body lines just perfect before paint.
- Apply the final color, clear coating and buffing to perfection.
- Final installation of all that beautiful interior.
- Testing to ensure that all mechanicals are in working order.
This beautiful roadster was recognized in Street Rodder Magazine in 2009 and awarded the Turtle Wax Top 100. The car has also been featured at Boston World of Wheels, and Detroit Autorama 2009.
The car will be the subject of an upcoming feature in Street Rodder Magazine in 2010.
